Trey Sermon and Kennedy Brooks are two of the best running backs in the Big 12, making Oklahoma football a scary team to defend.

How many teams can lose a 1,000-yard rusher to injury in the second game of the season and still have two running backs combine for over 2,000 yards? Your answer should be just Oklahoma.

The Sooners lost Rodney Anderson who eventually decided to forgo his senior season and prepare for the NFL. He was expected to have a huge season in 2018, but his injury cut all of that short after just two games.

That injury gave way to Trey Sermon to take over and he led the team with 164 carries for 947 yards and 13 touchdowns, but he was third on the team in yards on the ground behind Heisman winner Kyler Murray and freshman running back Kennedy Brooks.

Brooks was looked at as a third option heading into the season, but led the team with 1,056 yard and added 12 touchdowns on 8.9 yards per carry. He took advantage of his carries and showed plenty of explosion and athleticism, putting himself in position to win the starting job over Sermon heading into 2019 — or at least a split of carries.

Everyone talks about Oklahoma’s offense, highlighted by Alabama transfer Jalen Hurts along with his plethora of talented receiving and tight end targets, but don’t overlook Sermon and Brooks.

In fact, those two backs form arguably the most potent 1-2 punch in the nation and it’s going to be a nightmare for opponents to game plan for that in 2019. The Big 12 already knows how impressive this duo is and both Houston and UCLA will find out in non-conference play.

Oklahoma’s offense won’t take a step back in 2019 even with the departure of Marquise Brown and Murray, it’ll only get better with Brooks and Sermon leading the way.
