Depth at the quarterback position is very important in college football. Who are the best backup quarterbacks going into 2019.

College football is a tough game. In order to be an elite team, depth becomes very important. Just ask Alabama, who relied on a backup quarterback the past two seasons against Georgia.

Whether your starter gets injured, needs rest in blowout games, lacks a running skill set, or just doesn’t have the skill to carry the team, the backup can be the savior of a program. Two of last year’s College Football Playoff teams had a different starter to end the year than they did to start.

However, most of these teams lost either their starter or backup quarterback. Who are the best backup quarterbacks heading into the 2019 season?

Honorable Mentions

Jayden Daniels, Arizona State

Jayden Daniels is in the middle of a quarterback competition at Arizona State. It will be some time before their starter is announced, but he has a great chance to earn that job. He was a highly-touted recruit out of high school, and he has the potential to take over the Pac-12 when it’s his time. It’s just a question as to when that will be.

Graham Mertz, Wisconsin

Another freshman with a chance to steal the starting job in his first season, Graham Mertz is a great talent with quality touch as a passer. The only thing standing in the way of Mertz starting at Wisconsin is Jack Coan. He saw limited time as a reserve last year, but he has seniority. If Mertz fails to win the job to start the season, I would not be surprised if he manages to win it before the year is over.
