Charlie Brewer is getting overlooked by just about everyone, but the Baylor football star will make a strong case for the Big 12’s top quarterback.

Jalen Hurts, Sam Ehlinger and Brock Purdy. Those are the three names Charlie Brewer is constantly sitting behind when it comes to preseason All-Big 12 teams.

But why?

The junior from Baylor is second in returning passing leaders in the Big 12, passing for 3,019 yards and 19 touchdowns last season. He also completed about 62 percent of his throws. He was in his second year as the team’s starting quarterback and helped turn Baylor from a one-win team to a seven-win bowl-bound squad.

Brewer won MVP honors in a Texas Bowl win over Vanderbilt where he passed for 384 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for a career-best 109 yards with another score. He was the reason the Bears won that game and finished above the .500 mark on the season.

Baylor’s defense was mediocre, at best, in 2018 but Brewer’s ability to put the team on his back while leading the nation’s No. 19 passing offense was impressive and saved the Bears on numerous occasions.

When the defense couldn’t get a stop against Oklahoma early in the season, it was Brewer who kept the game even somewhat respectable with 400 passing yards and two scores. When Kansas State was giving Baylor’s defense all it could handle, Brewer stepped up and completed 68 percent of his throws for nearly 300 yards and a touchdown for the win.

If it wasn’t for his strong performance against Texas Tech in the season finale, the Bears wouldn’t have made a bowl game, but he went for 308 yards and three touchdowns on 22-of-30 passing.

Brewer isn’t getting the recognition he deserves from his Big 12 peers, but that will all change in 2019 as he’ll make a strong case for the best quarterback in the conference — and yes, that includes Ehlinger, Hurts and Purdy.

Is it because Baylor isn’t exactly a conference contender yet? Possibly, but Brewer is going to make a lot of people look silly this season.
