Wake Forest Football: Breaking down Demon Deacons’ 2019 QB battle
Wake Forest football has two solid quarterbacks to choose from in its quarterback competition. Who will win the starting job?
Wake Forest is coming off its third straight winning season, which is the first time for the Demon Deacons to accomplish that since the 2006-08 seasons when Jim Grobe was the head coach and they had Riley Skinner at quarterback.
Wake Forest was able to have a winning season this past year despite breaking in two new quarterbacks who each threw for over 1,000 yards.
Going into the 2018 season, the Demon Deacons had to replace John Wolford, who finished his Wake Forest career as one of the best quarterbacks in program history. He ended up performing so well in the AAF (before it shut down early), that the Los Angeles Rams signed him this past spring and he will have a shot to compete for a roster spot.
Kendall Hinton was the favorite to replace Wolford last year, but ended up getting suspended the first few games of the season and never had a chance to regain the starting role.
True freshman Sam Hartman started the first nine games before getting hurt. Once Hartman was injured, sophomore quarterback Jamie Newman took over the last four games (including the bowl game). The Demon Deacons were 4-5 with Hartman under center and 3-1 with Newman.
Together they combined for over 3,000 yards passing, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Both players also had around 250 yards rushing while Newman had four rushing touchdowns and Hartman had two. Both guys did some really good things under center last year and whoever ends up winning the job should help lead Wake Forest to its fourth straight bowl game.
With that said, let’s take a deeper look at what each quarterback does well.
