There have been few losses for Alabama football since Nick Saban became head coach. Which ones were the worst of that era?
It is certainly safe to say that Alabama fans are spoiled by success. Ever since Saban’s first championship with the Tide, they have only had one year of three or more losses. The Tide rarely lose.
When a team loses so rarely, the pain of a whole season boils into their few losses. It seems like Alabama’s losses in recent memory have all been historic. Every loss seems to rip the hearts out of Alabama fans. With that being said, which losses were the most gut-wrenching?
Honorable Mentions
National Championship (2018)
Although this loss is surely one of the worst Saban has ever had, I don’t think it counts as gut-wrenching. Tide fans knew Alabama could have played better, but Clemson clearly looked like the best team on the field. There was no controversy, and Alabama didn’t get their hopes up early like they did against other teams.
Texas A&M (2012)
Losing to Johnny Manziel was terrible for Alabama fans, but it was mostly because of his arrogance. They won a ring that year, and they haven’t lost to the Aggies since. With this being seven years ago, it feels like water under the bridge at this point. If Aggies fans want to bring up this victory over Alabama, Tide fans will mention all the other games they have played against each other.
Ohio State (2014)
This game was more frustrating than anything else. Alabama thought they had a great chance to win a ring in 2014, especially when they knew they would have to beat Ohio State in the semifinal. Ohio State was on their third quarterback, after all. After this game, people were trying to compare Urban Meyer to Nick Saban, which was one of the worst parts of the loss. Looking back, it was just a lost opportunity to win a ring.
