Wyoming Football: Can Cowboys continue momentum in 2019?
Wyoming football looks to improve upon an up-and-down 2018 season with a steadier run-based offense, and hard-nosed veteran defense in 2019.
The 2018 season was somewhat of a rebuilding year for Craig Bohl’s Wyoming team with the loss of a first-round quarterback in Josh Allen and other talented players.
It began 2-6 before winning their final four games to finish 6-6 on the year with some momentum. Wyoming was not invited to a bowl game but 2019 looks to be year that it can get itself back into the postseason and even possibly challenge for a division title.
The offense looks like it will be in the hands of redshirt freshman quarterback Sean Chambers who helped engineer the turnaround in 2018 before an injury cost him the final game of the year. Chambers is a run threat who wasn’t asked to throw much.
Defense will be the backbone of this Cowboys team. Wyoming had a stellar defensive backfield last year and they return both starting cornerbacks in Antonio Hull and Tyler Hall. The linebacking corps is one of if not the best in the Mountain West with returning starters Logan Wilson and Cassh Maluia.
The Cowboys also return Lou Groza Award finalist Cooper Rothe to the team, who made 16-of-17 field goals in 2018. He’ll be a valuable asset to the team, even if special teams is somewhat under-appreciated in the world of football.
This will be Bohl’s fifth season as head coach of the Cowboys and it could be an important one as this program and its fans would like to get back to contending for the division and the conference like they were just two seasons ago. If anyone can get them there, it’s Bohl.
