Louisville Football: Breaking down Cardinals’ 2019 QB battle
Improved quarterback play will lead to an improved record for Louisville football in 2019. But who will come out on top of the quarterback battle?
Louisville has put the 2018 season behind it and has moved on. It went 2-10 in what was one of the worst seasons in program history and their only two wins were against Indiana State and Western Kentucky. There was plenty of blame to go around for 2018’s struggle, and Bobby Petrino was fired.
The Cardinals had to replace one of the best quarterbacks in program history as well last year in Lamar Jackson. He won the Heisman Trophy, left as Louisville’s all-time leading rusher and all-time leader in rushing touchdowns, top five in career passing yards and passing touchdowns, and was the 32nd overall pick in 2018 by the Ravens and helped lead them to a playoff appearance.
Everyone expected some growing pains with a new quarterback being broken in as the starter in 2018, but no one expected Louisville as a team to throw for barely over 2,500 yards, and have only 10 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
Jawon Pass and Malik Cunningham played the majority of time under center and will be the main two quarterbacks competing for the starting job.
We all know Louisville struggled passing the ball last year, but both guys are talented players who will improve in 2019 thanks to new head coach Scott Satterfield. Let’s take a brief look at what each guy brings to the table as a starter and how they can build off of 2018.
