After winning the starting job over Nick Starkel last Fall, Mond enters 2019 as the first upperclassman (outside of former grad transfer Trevor Knight) to start at quarterback for the Aggies in the SEC era. He was also the first Aggie passer to eclipse the 3,000-yard mark in a single season since Johnny Manziel.

The accolades don’t stop there, as the former five-star signal-caller posted career highs in touchdowns (27), completion rate (57 percent), and total yards of offense (3,447) in his second season under center. However, it wasn’t all clear skies and sunshine during the San Antonio native’s sophomore campaign.

Outside of being sacked 34 times (good for the 3rd most out of any Power Five quarterback last season), Mond also turned the ball over in seven games and had four contests with two or more turnovers.

Granted, not all of the Aggie’s occasional offensive woes can be blamed on the dual-threat passer — the offensive line was overmatched for most of the season while the receiving corp struggled with drops — a chunk of the burden certainly has to fall into the lap of No. 11.

His indecisiveness, ball security, and habit of keying in on one receiver after the snap has attributed to most of his issues on the field. Luckily for the Aggies, Mond spent a majority of the Spring shoring up the holes in his game under Jimbo Fisher’s tutelage.

Though still seeking perfection, Mond enters the season with a lot of football under his belt and a firm grasp of the offense. A strong rapport with his receiving corp, coupled with a playbook that will cater to his strengths should lead to the most prolific season an Aggie passer has had since Johnny Football was roaming the sidelines inside Kyle Field.
