Depth issues on defense could be tricky

Pat Narduzzi was hired at Pitt in 2015 after spending seven seasons as defensive coordinator at Michigan State. In his last four seasons in East Lansing, his defenses averaged seventh in defensive SP+ rating (per Football Outsiders), with his highest rated defense ranked second.

What was perceived as a strength for Narduzzi has not translated in Pittsburgh. In his first four seasons as head coach, the defenses have averaged 53rd in SP+ rating with the best defense ranked 35th.

Panther defenses have been average at best and become stagnant as more Narduzzi recruits have filled the roster. Even with Randy Bates taking over the defensive coordinator position last season, the defense has its moments but it was just middle of the road overall.

The defense will need to be more than ordinary if they expect to improve this season. Along the line, defensive end Rashad Weaver returns from a 14 tackle for loss and six and half sack season ago. He will be the star and if Patrick Jones can step up on the other end along with Amir Watts at tackle, they could all cause some havoc.

The linebackers have to be replaced, however junior Elias Reynolds returns at the middle position after starting seven games last season. He should become a leader for the unproven guys filling in on the outside. The secondary also needs to replace parts but junior cornerback Dane Jackson and 90 tackle free safety Damar Hamlin back.

The Panthers have a lot of seniors and juniors on their two deep defense which is great as long as they stay healthy. What could cause problems is there is a ton of unproven freshman and sophomores behind the starters. A few injuries in key spots and the defense could start to unravel.
