Laney College in California is next up on Last Chance U’s tour of the country — or that’s how it seems — after a couple of stints out east and then in farm country. East Mississippi Community College in Seasons 1 and 2 may have been the most popular but fans loved the tough-nosed attitude of Jason Brown in Seasons 3 and 4, especially since he had no filter.
Now the show will be taking place at Laney College, but what do we know about the program early on?
Well, Laney is coming off its first California Community College Athletic Association (or CCCAA) title in school history, taking down Ventura College. It finished the 2018 season with an 11-2 record and was considered the No. 1 team in the nation.
Head coach John Beam also doubles as the school’s athletic director and he joined the program as a running backs coach in 2004 before getting promoted to offensive coordinator in 2005. He has been the head coach since 2012, winning a couple of league titles and making six bowl games in that time frame. The program is 29-6 over the past three seasons.
As for the talent it produces, it had two top-250 JUCO prospects following the 2018 season and both went to Oregon State in Jordan Whittley and Nahshon Wright.
In the 2018 class, it produced three-star safety, a top-100 JUCO talent, Je’Vari Anderson who committed to UCLA.
As for the upcoming 2020 recruiting class, Laney has No. 25 JUCO prospect Rejzohn Wright, a three-star cornerback, who is being recruited by the likes of UCLA and Oregon State.
It seems like Last Chance U has found yet another successful program which spits out Division 1 prospects left and right. Will the head coach be as entertaining as Buddy Stephens and Brown? We shall see.
