North Carolina football has had a forgettable couple of years, but will that lack of success be forgotten in year one of Mack Brown?
The 2017 and 2018 seasons for North Carolina did not go according to plan. In those two seasons, they went 5-18 with their only wins coming against Old Dominion, Western Carolina and Pittsburgh (they beat Western Carolina and Pittsburgh in 2017 and 2018).
The Tar Heels were in the ACC title game in 2015 and ended up with 11 wins that year, so their downward spiral happened somewhat quickly.
There’s plenty of blame to go around for the past two seasons. You can blame the offense, the defense, the coaching staff, etc., but anytime a team declines that quickly in a short time span it’s rare that the head coach keeps his job. Former head coach Larry Fedora was fired last year and they bring back legendary coach Mack Brown for the 2019 season.
Brown brings with him a wealth of experience and success as he has had over 240 wins as a head coach, over 20 bowl appearances, a national championship title and several conference championships. He has had success before as the head coach at UNC over 20 years ago and was even the ACC Coach of the Year in 1996.
Brown led UNC to eight straight winning seasons, including three seasons with double-digit victories and several bowl wins as well. He has turned the UNC football program around before and will be looking to do the exact same thing starting here in 2019.
