How competitive will Oregon State football be next season under second-year head coach Jonathan Smith in 2019? The Beavers need a turnaround.
Is a Mike Riley-type run the expectation for any head coach in Corvallis? During his tenure the Beavers were 93-80 and 6-2 in bowl games finishing in the top 25 four times during his 14 total years at Oregon State.
Even if that’s the ceiling second year head coach Jonathan Smith has lots of work to do before he can even dream of doing as well as Riley did.
Oregon State is “one of those schools” — they’re the little brother in the state like Washington State is to Washington and Michigan State is to Michigan. They don’t have the facilities or the Nike money that big brother Oregon has. They can’t recruit like the Ducks can either, so coaching at a place like Corvallis has its challenges.
