On Monday, Texas A&M football lost true freshman tight end Baylor Cupp to a broken lower leg. How will the Aggies go about replacing him?
With the departure of Jace Sternberger to the NFL, Texas A&M’s new tight end friendly offense was left with a big-time question mark. Everything was figured out with sophomore Glenn Beal along with true freshman Baylor Cupp until disaster struck.
On Monday, Cupp was rolled up on during scrimmage, resulting in a broken lower leg that required a plate to be put between his ankle and his tibia. This injury will take him out for at the very least the majority of the season.

The question now is this: Where do the Aggies go from here?
The first option is Glenn Beal, a sophomore out of New Orleans, La. He was one of the guys that Fisher and his staff discussed as a starter in Sternberger’s absence. He, along with Cupp, was supposed to be the guys to fill the hole. He finished the spring game five catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. Look for him to have a bigger role.
That moves us to true freshman Jalen Wydermyer, a player who has been largely overshadowed by Cupp but will now be moving into a bigger role due to his injury. That is never how a guy wants to break into the starting lineup, but you gotta take the opportunities when they emerge. Fisher seems pretty high on Wydermyer in what he has put up during scrimmages and fall camp.
The Aggies also moved Camron Horry back to tight end from the defensive line. Jimbo is high on Horry and we will likely see him actually get some playing time as a result of this unfortunate injury development. Junior Ryan Renick is another one you may see. He is the only tight end to return that caught a pass last season, so that has to mean something right?
The Aggies also have a nice group of walk-on tight ends, including Jacob Groff, Tyler Ondrusek, Daniel Haak and Tyler Scoggin. So, to put it mildly, the Aggies have options. However, Cupp was set to be a special player and his loss will be felt throughout the program this season as they scramble to figure out who will be stepping up in his place.
