Florida Football: 5 bold predictions for Gators’ 2019 season
4. Lamical Perine rushes for 1,000 yards
Lamical Perine has waited four years for this moment. After splitting time with Jordan Scarlett and Malik Davis over the past few seasons, Perine finds himself as Florida’s bellcow running back for 2019. No longer a secret, he told 247Sports that he’s ready to put doubters to rest:
“A lot of people sleep on me. In my eyes and in everybody who knows me, they know I’m a ball player.”
This season presents Perine with the opportunity to rack up some serious rushing yardage for the Gators – 1,000 yards isn’t out of the question.
Similar to Feleipe Franks’ situation, Perine will only go as far as Florida’s inexperienced offensive line will take him. If the line can adequately open enough holes for the Alabama-native, Perine will surely excel in Dan Mullen’s offense that emphasizes a balanced rushing attack.
Interestingly, it’s possible that his versatility could hurt his rushing numbers. Perine showed off his receiving skills last season which the coaches will undoubtedly take advantage of more in 2019. With the return of a healthy Malik Davis and the talented Dameon Pierce waiting in the wings, Perine could see his number of carries dwindle if he struggles early in the season.
Those situations are unlikely, however, as Perine has already established himself as the outright leaders in the Gators’ backfield.
