Mississippi State football went 8-5 in 2018 in Joe Moorhead’s first season as the head coach. What does the 2019 season hold in store for the team?

Joe Moorhead is entering his second year as the Mississippi State head football coach. Last year was a wake-up call for him in SEC play and the competition that is brought each weekend. He is an offensive minded coach, yet his offense struggled at times last year, scoring no points against Bama, three points against LSU, six points against Florida and seven points against Kentucky.

The Bulldogs’ offense looked good against lesser quality defenses, but when they faced the top defenses in the country, their lack of a passing attack was exposed.

Quarterback Nick Fitzgerald was one of the most productive quarterbacks in Mississippi State history, and while he struggled with accuracy, he was still productive and ended up finishing his career third all-time in passing yards and second all time in rush yards at Mississippi State.

Fitzgerald moves on and one of the main talking points of the offseason for the Bulldogs has been who will replace him. They have returning Keytaon Thompson, who played in place of Fitzgerald when he was injured and suspended. They also brought in Penn State transfer Tommy Stevens, who just won the starting job this week.

Regardless who ends up at quarterback by the end of the year, the Bulldogs face a tough schedule again in 2019.
