Florida Football: Report card for thrilling Week 0 win over Miami
By Dakota Cox
At quarterback, Feleipe Franks had his fair share of highs and lows. He started out the game efficient, but he never took the big shot down the field. He mostly relied on his skill players to make something happen once they had the ball in their hands. That works, but it won’t give Florida a chance to beat the tougher SEC teams they will face later in the season. He also had some misreads on some passes.
On the two fumbles by running backs, Franks holds part of the blame. The read option fumble wasn’t his fault, but he had a bad toss on the other one. The running back still should have made the play, but that’s a routine play that Franks should make.
On the bright side, there were plenty of good plays. When the team was down, Franks managed to make the plays they needed to take the lead back. He struggled on third down, but he made some good plays on fourth down to keep drives alive, and that inevitably won the game for the Gators.
The first interception was tipped by his own receiver, so I don’t want to criticize him too much for it. However, that last interception was simply inexcusable. When you have the ball in the final minutes of the game with a lead, you simply have to take what the defense gives you and avoid a disaster. The interception was a potential disaster, and it left the game up in the air. Franks had a chance to put the game out of reach, and he kept Miami in the game.
Franks could’ve done a lot better, but getting a win against that tough a defense deserves some credit.
