College Football’s Top 50 Fanbases
20. Washington
The good
Elite coaches can turn good programs into great ones. Washington had good bones and a hungry fan base. The addition of Chris Petersen in 2014 has elevated the Huskies to an even higher level which should extend beyond his departure from the sidelines.
The bad
There weren’t as many fans in the stands when Tyrone Willingham went 0-12 in 2008. Washington is branding itself as one of the sports’ premier programs, but they’ve only recently returned to being national title contenders.
The bottom line
Whether it’s the west coast location or the early 2000s swoon, Washington fell out of favor in the national news for the first time in a long while. The Huskies have had at least one Top 10 finish in eight of the last nine decades, never staying down for long.
More than likely, that’s what makes being a fan of the purple and white so enticing. No matter the coach or the conference, Washington is going to be pretty good with the upside to be great.
