Penn State football was one of the last teams to publicly name a starting quarterback. James Franklin is expected to rely on Sean Clifford.

Penn State football has to move in a new direction after Trace McSorley left for the NFL. He left for the draft and Tommy Stevens chose to transfer to Mississippi State, so that left the burden on Sean Clifford, who really hasn’t had much of an opportunity to play yet.

Clifford saw limited action last season in blowouts, but his brute arm strength was enough to get Penn State fans excited about the future.

Before having to be thrown into the Citrus Bowl due to McSorley’s injury, Clifford was perfect in his passing opportunities during his freshman season. He completed all five of his passing attempts for 195 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He already owns the longest passing touchdown in Penn State history, at 95 yards. He also averaged almost 28 yards per attempt. His stats jump off the page, but it’s easier to have standout stats in garbage time.

Now Clifford is expected to carry the workload, and fill some pretty large shoes. Let’s look back at Clifford’s career to see what put him in the position he’s in today.
