Kentucky Football: 3 takeaways from win vs. Toledo in Week 1
By Shelbie Warr
It took a while to really get going, but Kentucky football ran away late against Toledo to begin the 2019 campaign. What did we learn in this one?
Kentucky lost two big-name players from the 2019 season that no one thought they’d be able to replace: Josh Allen and Benny Snell. Many counted them out for the 2019 season, thinking they wouldn’t be able to replicate the 10-win season that they put together a year ago.
I’m not convinced that they will be able to replicate it either, but they were at least able to finesse a win against Toledo to open the season. What did we learn from this one?
3. Allowing teams to hang around won’t fly in the SEC
It took Kentucky until the third quarter to gain the lead over a Toledo team that honestly has no business being in a close game with a supposed to be strong SEC East team, a team that could make a push toward an East title if they really put their minds to it and not let anyone tell them they aren’t good enough.
All of that being considered, slow starts and letting the other team hang around before you step on the gas and really put your game together isn’t going to fly. Especially not when you play in the SEC against teams like Georgia and Florida.
The Wildcats, lead by second-year quarterback Terry Wilson, have to put their foot down early and really get the game going if they want to put together wins this season over the bigger teams coming up.
