LSU football took care of business against Georgia Southern on Saturday evening, to no one’s surprise, and Joe Burrow looked great.

All summer, we heard about the new-look LSU offense. The Tigers opened the 2019 season against Georgia Southern and did not disappoint with a 55-3 win.

While it might be a lower-rated team, Georgia Southern won 10 games last season and its option offense had the potential to cause problems for the Tigers, particularly a week before their big game against Texas.

In the end, it was all LSU. The Tigers jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, and never looked back. They steamrolled the Eagles and the score doesn’t tell enough of the story.

Here are the three biggest takeaways from the Tigers’ victory.

3. Joe Burrow is the real deal

Joe Burrow received a lot of hype from the LSU faithful and coaching staff coming into the season. A lot of the talk of a new-look offense had to do with Burrow making the leap to one of the best quarterbacks in college football.

It’s only Week 1, and it’s safe to say Burrow did not disappoint. He carved up the Eagles’ defense Saturday, going 23-for-27 for 278 yards and five touchdowns in a little over two quarters of play. He was able to spread the ball around the field, and was an impressive leader of this offense. Burrow tied LSU’s school record with five touchdowns in a game — and that was accomplished in the first half.

We all knew he had a big arm, but what impressed me the most was his touch, including his second touchdown on a fade route to Justin Jefferson.

Burrow was quick, efficient and, most importantly for Tigers fans, impressive in Week 1.

We know what LSU is, and it’s a skilled, athletic defensive-minded team. If Burrow can continue to play at a Heisman level, this could be a special season for the Tigers.
