Nevada football didn’t list Brandon Talton as the starting kicker, but he came in and nailed the biggest kick of his life to walk off with a win.

Imagine walking into you first class on Tuesday after Labor Day and being greeted by a standing ovation from your peers. That’s exactly what Nevada’s Brandon Talton will see after hitting a game-winning 56-yard field goal to beat Purdue on Friday.

Not even listed as the starting kicker before the game, Talton shook off some nerves from his first attempt, which was actually a free practice kick because Jeff Brohm iced him, and nailed the biggest boot of his young career.

The 165-pound freshman from Vacaville, Calif., was immediately jumping for joy as the ball left his foot and his teammates essentially carried him off the field as the Wolf Pack pulled off the early-season upset on a comeback win at home.

Nevada looked to be down and out, falling behind 24-7 while Elijah Sindelar was able to pick apart the Wolf Pack secondary for over 400 yards and four touchdowns. But a furious comeback by Nevada, led by freshman quarterback Carson Strong, tied the game up with under a minute left and then Sindelar threw a crucial pick — which was tipped.

The game was wild and had that “Pac-12 After Dark” feeling, but it was Mountain West Madness instead.

The Wolf Pack shocked the nation by taking down one of the most prolific offenses in the Big Ten and an up-and-coming program.

And you know that Talton is going to be walking taller than his 5-10 frame for the rest of the season as he’s basically the big man on campus now. What a leg.
