Ole Miss Football: 3 takeaways from close loss vs. Memphis in Week 1
By Shelbie Warr
1. Ole Miss doesn’t have enough to replace what it lost
This Ole Miss offense lost a boatload of production to the 2019 NFL Draft. Jordan Ta’amu is gone. AJ Brown is gone. DK Metcalf is gone. DeMarkus Lodge is gone. Everyone thought that maybe, just maybe, this Ole Miss offense could rebuild quickly behind quarterback Matt Corral, running back Scottie Phillips and wide receiver Elijah Moore.
That just wasn’t what happened against Memphis though as the offense was kept in check by the Tiger defense that no one thought would make much of a difference to a team like Ole Miss who prides themselves on the offensive side of the ball.
I already said that maybe Rich Rodriguez wasn’t the right hire for Ole Miss and while I think that is true, part of the issue is that this team doesn’t have enough talent to replace what they lost. Corral just isn’t good enough to play against SEC defenses and he doesn’t have enough weapons to put together a strong offense to compete in the SEC West.
