The Tommy Devito era got off to a rocky start against Liberty in Week 1, but Syracuse football still found a way to get the win.

Life after Eric Dungey may not be so pretty, after all. In just one start against Liberty, all hope for a potential breakout season from Tommy DeVito turned sour.

Sure, Syracuse won the game in convincing fashion, 24-0, but the quarterback position seemed to be an area of concern for a team that hadn’t had that issue in some time. Heck, DeVito was looked at as the next star for the Syracuse offense.

After a 17-for-35 performance where DeVito finished with 176 yards and two interceptions, the Orange may have to figure out what went wrong or any hope of ACC title contention will fly right out of the window and Dino Babers will receive a mountain of the blame — fair or not.

Maybe Liberty’s defense is just that good, you might say. But that’s unlikely as the Flames finished close to the bottom of all FBS teams in every major category — we’re talking the No. 110-125 range. While it’s possible a team can improve drastically, it’s unlikely it became a top-60 defense overnight.

Syracuse has the pieces to contend in the ACC, but the young quarterback needs to figure things out before the season spirals out of control and he loses all confidence. Trying to be the next Dungey is going to get him hurt, he just needs to worry about being his own player.

The Orange passing defense allowed over 230 yards through the air, but negative-4 on the ground. The team had an up-and-down opener, but Maryland should be a better test in Week 2.
