Oklahoma Football: 3 takeaways from Sooners’ win over Houston
3. Jalen Hurts’ Heisman chances improved
This game highlighted two of the front-runners for the 2019 Heisman Trophy. However, this isn’t the first year that either of these two quarterbacks have been in the Heisman discussion.
Jalen Hurts was the first freshman to ever start for Nick Saban at Alabama. As a starter, he took the Crimson Tide to back-to-back National Championship Games and only lost once. As for D’Eriq King, he was very much in the Heisman considerations last season until he was injured towards the end of the year.
Both players demonstrated their ability to get the job done in the passing game and on the ground. However, it was Jalen Hurts who stole the show. By halftime, Hurts had 302 total yards and three touchdowns. He looked extremely comfortable in Lincoln Riley’s offense, and was making mature decisions. On many of his rushes, he avoided unnecessary contact. And on passing plays, Hurts took his time to work through his progression, and eventually, find the open man.
Hurts had a career day in his opening game as a Sooner. He finished with 508 total yards, breaking Baker Mayfield’s Sooner record of 396. Hurts complete 20-of-23 passes for 332 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 176 yards and added three more touchdowns on the ground.
Jalen Hurts is well on his way to a Heisman Trophy.
