TCU football finds two capable quarterbacks in Arkansas-Pine Bluff win
By Dana Becker
It would appear as if TCU football and head coach Gary Patterson have two quarterbacks ready to run the offense this year.
Max Duggan, a much-hyped freshman out of Iowa, threw for 165 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, while Kansas State transfer Alex Delton had 119 yards passing a team-high 67 yards rushing in a 39-7 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Duggan, who nearly won the starting job outright after a strong preseason, completed 16 of 23, passing for one score and adding another on the ground. Delton completed under 50 percent at 10-for-22, but had success on just seven carries rushing the football.
The Horned Frogs finished with 36 carries for 200 yards on the ground, as five different players had at least five carries. TreVontae Hights had a big night, catching eight passes for 108 yards, with Jalen Reagor overcoming some drops to grab five passes for 71 yards and a score.
Reagor had a handful of drops and also muffed a punt that led to the line touchdown for Pine Bluff. He did, however, haul in a 37-yard touchdown strike from Duggan to give TCU a 29-7 lead.
Hights finally had his coming out party, as the senior broke the 100-yard mark for the first time in four seasons. He had six catches total his previous three years in Fort Worth, Texas.
All three scoring drives for the Horned Frog offense were led by Duggan on the night. TCU did have to settle for five field goal attempts upon reaching the Golden Lion red zone.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff had just 215 total yards of offense, going 4-for-17 in third-down conversions and recording only nine first downs. Taeyler Porter ran for 48 yards and KeShawn Williams had score with 44 yards on the ground.
The Golden Lions will begin work next week on capturing the SWAC when they take on Alabama A&M on the road. TCU is off before heading to Big Ten foe Purdue.
