Texas football looked ready to play against Louisiana Tech Bulldogs tonight in Austin. Here are some takeaways from the game.

The Texas Longhorns looked efficient and crisp in a comfortable 45-14 win against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs at Darrel K. Royal Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Here are some quick takeaways from the game.

3. The Longhorn defense answered some questions

Texas lost a lot off of its defense from last season, and needed to know where they would find their pass rush and who would anchor the front. They answered those questions. Yes, J’Mar Smith threw for 331 yards against the Horns, but needed 51 attempts to do so. He only completed one pass for over 10 yards tonight, and threw an interception.

What was most impressive was the Bulldogs couldn’t keep their offense on the field. The Longhorns tackled well, and got LaTech off the field on third down.

2. Sam Ehlinger was efficient passing the ball

We know about Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger’s toughness and moxie, and all those other cliches about how he plays quarterback, but what was most impressive about his performance was how well he threw. That is the next step in Sam Ehlinger’s game, his ability to throw with accuracy and efficiency.

On Saturday, he answered those questions going 28-for-38 (88 percent) for 276 yards four touchdowns, and most importantly no interceptions. Anytime you play an opponent in which you have the obvious athletic advantage, it’s so important you play efficient football, and Ehlinger did.

1. Texas played a clean game — for the most part

All good coaches will find something on the film to coach up, but Texas head coach Tom Herman has to be pleased with how Texas played. They looked ready and played clean. They did have the one lost fumble and six penalties, but none of the penalties were serious. They looked aggressive on defense, and smooth on offense. All in all a good first performance for the Longhorns.
