5. Tua Tagovailoa, Joe Burrow

This is the only tie on the list and I was tempted to make it a three way tie with Ohio State’s quarterback Justin Fields, but elected to go with these two.

Both Tua Tagovailoa and Joe Burrow played inferior opponents and dominated as expected. It was a rough weekend overall for the SEC, but Tua and Burrow were bright spots for the conference.

Let’s look at each one briefly.

The Alabama offense got off to a slow start against Duke as they only scored 14 points in the first half. The Tide has a new offensive coordinator and it took them just a bit to figure out what would work and what play calls to send in.

However, the Tide scored 28 points in the second half and 21 of those points came in the third quarter. Tua was out of the game by the fourth quarter. He was as efficient and accurate as last year as he completed 26-of-31 pass attempts for 336 yards and four touchdown passes. His numbers certainly could have been higher if the Tide wanted to run up the score

Even though LSU was playing a Georgia Southern team, the Tiger fans were excited to see their new offense as it consists heavily on RPOs. Georgia Southern won double-digit games last year and there was a thought they may stick around for a bit. However, once the game started it was clear that Georgia Southern had no business being on the same field as LSU.

Burrow was outstanding as he completed 23-of-27 passes for 278 yards and five touchdowns. He had more touchdown passes than incompletions and either tied or set the record for touchdowns for LSU in a single game. Impressive performance for Burrow, and regardless who you play, those numbers are hard to do against air.

Like Tua, Burrow sat out the end of the game as his back up got time to play.
