College Football 2019: Top 5 QB performances from Week 1
Jamie Newman won the quarterback competition for Wake Forest in what was one of the closest competitions in college football. He came out against one of the top Group of Five schools from last year, Utah State, in the opener and he put on a show.
The talk coming into the game was Utah State’s quarterback, Jordan Love, and rightfully so. He’s an NFL talent who showcased why he is being considered a top NFL pick, but it was Jamie Newman who ended the game on top.
From the very start of the game, Newman was slinging it. He ended the game completing 34-of-47 passes for 401 yards passing and three touchdowns. He also added a rushing score. Newman’s ability to spread the field and push the ball downfield helps open up the rest of Wake’s offense.
Wake had a 100-yard rusher in this game and had five receivers with at least four or more receptions. The success of Wake’s offense was heavily due to Newman spreading the ball around, pushing it down field and taking what the defense gave him.
