Utah football opened its season with a convincing win over Holy War rival BYU and people have had time to completely overreact.

Opening the season with a rivalry game sets the tone for the rest of the year. If everything goes as planned, Utah will take that momentum gained from the BYU win and turn it into a Pac-12 title run and College Football Playoff berth.

But that would be in a perfect world and college football is too whacky for that to take place because of a Week 1 win.

Some fans are already banking on a Pac-12 title because of the BYU win and that’s what we call an overreaction. Let’s take a look at three of the most common overreactions from the Holy War battle.

3. This isn’t a rivalry anymore

Let’s just get this one out of the way real quick. No, the series hasn’t been close for the past two or three decades, but this is one of those games that just has that rivalry feel. The two sides don’t necessarily like each other and it’s evident.

Fans get excited for this one even though Utah has won nine straight games and 90 percent of the last 10 matchups in the series. Sure, the Utes have owned the Cougars, but let’s not act like this game doesn’t mean just a little more to both sides than a regular non-conference game.

Just ask a team like Ohio State if it still gets motivated to play Michigan even though the Buckeyes have dominated the rivalry. It’s been one-sided lately, but it’s still intense. Neither side likes the other.

Utah fans, just because your team has dominated over the past couple of decades doesn’t mean this isn’t an intriguing rivalry.

Plus, 19 of the last 26 matchups in this rivalry have been decided by a touchdown or less.
