Virginia football opened its 2019 season with an ACC win over Pitt but can the Cavaliers maintain that momentum in a Week 2 warmup?

Virginia gets a Friday night matchup in Week 2 against William & Mary and it should be a nice warmup for the Cavaliers as they prepare to face Florida State in Week 3.

Will the Cavaliers take care of business against the Tribe or will the focus be too much on the Seminoles that they overlook William & Mary? On paper, this is an easy win for Virginia and it should cruise to victory, but that’s why they play the games.

3. William & Mary is held under 100 yards passing

William & Mary has a bit of a quarterback issue. Hollis Mathis, the projected QB1, had just 66 yards on 6-of-13 completions but he did rush for 127 yards and a score, leading the Tribe against Lafayette in Week 1. But he’s not going to be able to take off and run with ease against a defense like Virginia’s.

Backup quarterback Kilton Anderson had 100 yards passing on 4-of-8 completions and had the big-play throws, but neither is truly competent enough to give Virginia’s secondary problems.

The Tribe will have another lackluster performance through the air, passing for under 100 total yards while completing less than 50 percent of their passes. The two-quarterback system can only work against certain teams and Virginia is not one of them.

Anderson and Mathis are going to find it tough sledding to try and reach the end zone through the air against the Cavaliers.
