Virginia Football: 3 takeaways from blowout win over William & Mary
1. Virginia still has plenty of work to do
No, this game wasn’t close, by any means. The outcome was never actually in doubt as the Cavaliers seemed to score at will on both ends of the field as the defense and offense worked together to get the job done and improve to 2-0 on the year.
Bryce Perkins made some sloppy mistakes, finishing the game with just under 200 passing yards and two interceptions. His backup, Brennan Armstrong, was 9-for-10 through the air with just over 100 yards, but he, too, accounted for an interception. Virginia’s offense moved the ball, but it could have done so much more effectively against a mediocre William & Mary defense.
The Cavaliers’ defense remained stingy, holding the Tribe to 193 total yards but it still allowed three big plays which accounted for about 100 of that total. They need to cut down on the big play allowance as ACC teams will find a way to hurt them.
A win is a win and this one was comfortable, but there are still plenty of things to correct (such as turnover margin) heading into a crucial Week 3 matchup with Florida State.
