Jamie Newman beat out Sam Hartman for the starting job with Wake Forest football and he had yet another monster game against Rice on Friday.

Fresh off a solid showing against Army on the road in Week 1, Rice seemed to have a ton of confidence heading to Rice Stadium on Friday night, but Wake Forest’s Jamie Newman squashed it with a 41-21 win.

The 6-4, 230-pound junior quarterback, who beat out Sam Hartman for QB1 this summer, strung together his second straight monster performance to start the year. He’s quickly becoming the best quarterback who no one seems to be talking about.

Sure, his Week 1 showing against Utah State was impressive but it was against a defense that struggled a bit last year, but the Aggies are no joke. He led the Demon Deacons to a thrilling 38-35 win at home, giving the offense major confidence heading into a Week 2 matchup against a surprising Rice team.

But the Owls were no match for Newman’s newfound dominance. After throwing for 401 yards and three touchdowns against the Aggies last week, Newman tossed three more touchdown passes on 21-of-27 completions for 312 yards.

Through two games, he’s completing 74 percent of his passes for 713 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions. Yet he’s not getting the recognition he deserves.

Everyone seems to be waiting for him to face a defense with a pulse, but the Owls held a run-heavy Army attack to just 14 points when the Black Knights are known for wearing defenses down and running all over the field. That didn’t happen.

It’s time to start giving Newman the respect he deserves because he’s going to sneak up on some people in the ACC this season.
