Week 2 came and went with quite a bit of excitement and some unexpected results. Who were the biggest winners and losers in this week’s AP Top 25?
Week 1 didn’t bring much excitement, but man did that change in a hurry as Week 2 came and went. There were quite a few teams who struggled this week and some that shocked quite a few people. Overall, there was quite a bit to watch and if you didn’t get to tune in, here’s a quick run-down before we talk winners and losers.
Boise State struggled against Marshall at home a week after knocking off Florida State and Michigan nearly lost to Army. Oh yeah, speaking of Florida State, they nearly lost to ULM in a game that has Taggart firmly on the hot seat. Cal shocked the world and upset Washington. Maryland blew past the Orange. USC knocked off Stanford. Purdue got back on track against Vanderbilt.
LSU pushed past Texas late and Texas A&M struggled to get anything going offensively against top-ranked Clemson. Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma and Ohio State cruised to victory. Les Miles and Kansas lost to Coastal Carolina while Missouri bounced back from the loss to Wyoming to take down West Virginia. Mack Brown continued his “I’m not too old to coach” tour with a win over Miami. Ole Miss made Arkansas look really bad and Colorado knocked off Nebraska. BYU pushed Tennessee further into what has been called rock bottom.
If I missed your team, I’m sorry, but that is just about everyone I believe. Now, after all of that, we saw a bit of shakeup in the AP Top 25. Let’s talk winners and losers, shall we? We will start with the bad news.
Before we get to the four biggest losers, let’s talk honorable mention. Nebraska fell to Colorado in overtime and as a result the then-ranked No. 25 Cornhuskers fell out of the rankings. The-No. 21 Syracuse was manhandled by Maryland and they also fell out of the rankings. USC, who will discuss later, took down No. 23 Stanford and the Cardinal are also out of the rankings.
Now, onto the big guns.
