The Skinny

Texas transfer Shane Buechele has gotten off to a hot start and SMU has earned a couple of impressive wins over quality Group of Five opponents in Arkansas State and North Texas. Might the Mustangs be a sleeper to emerge from the AAC West and challenge UCF for conference supremacy?

Cincinnati had an opportunity to make a statement and announce itself as the team to beat in the Group of Five, but it could not be competitive against Ohio State in Columbus. The Buckeyes rolled to a 42-0 victory, knocking the Bearcats out of the New Year’s Six picture. There’s still time to recover, but a six touchdown defeat, regardless of the opponent, will be difficult to erase from memory.

Fresno State is 0-2, but it still looks like it will have a lot to say in the Mountain West race this season after suffering close defeats to power-five opponents USC and Minnesota to open the season. The schedule eases up now for Jeff Tedford’s team, and they should be 5-2 (and undefeated in the Mountain West) when they travel to Hawaii on the first weekend in November.
