Kansas State football pulled off the upset of Mississippi State in Week 3. What’d we learn from the Wildcats’ big win over the Bulldogs?

In this Big 12 vs. SEC matchup between Mississippi State and Kansas State, it was close the whole game with the Wildcats coming out on top and upsetting Mississippi State, 31-24.

While this wasn’t quite the anticipated matchup of the Big 12 and SEC as last week’s was (LSU and Texas), it was still a great game between the two conferences.

Here’s what we learned

3. Special teams played big factor

Special teams was a big factor in this game, primarily for Kansas State although some special teams mistakes by the Wildcats ended up in Mississippi State’s favor. Kansas State got its hands on several of Mississippi State’s punts throughout the game. On one of the punts, the Kansas State returner ended up muffing it and giving the ball back to Mississippi State.

Perhaps the biggest special teams play of the game was the kick return for a touchdown by Kansas State that tied the game up at 24-24. Kansas State went on to score another touchdown later in the game to take the lead.

Despite the muffed punt by Kansas State, they had the upper hand on special teams. Mississippi State will go back to the drawing board to try to get things right.
