2. Mississippi State’s defense was inconsistent

Throughout the game, the Bulldogs defense played up and down. Last year when Mississippi State played Kansas State, the Bulldogs dominated them largely due to the play of their defense. However, a lot of key players are gone from the Bulldogs’ defense and they are still in the process of being broken in and figuring things out.

While Kansas State ended up scoring 31 points, the defense only allowed 24 of those points as Kansas State had a kick return for a touchdown. Mississippi State gave up 17 points in the first half and seven points in the second half.

Mississippi State’s defense only allowed 15 points to Southern Miss last week, but allowed 28 to Louisiana in Week 1 and 24 of the 31 points against Kansas State. This is still a talented defense, but had trouble getting stops against Kansas State when they needed to.

Like their special teams unit, they will need to regroup and move on.
