A rain-marred day in Happy Valley ended with Penn State football prevailing over Pitt in the 100th meeting between the two teams. What’d we learn?

Lightning scares in Centre County forced a delay to the start of the 100th meeting between No. 13 Penn State and Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon at Beaver Stadium. With rain continuing to come down throughout the contest, the game turned into a defensive affair once it finally got underway 40 minutes after its originally-scheduled start.

Rivalry games often tend to yield weird results. This was no exception, as Pitt remained in the game as an underdog and threatened right up to the final whistle. In the end the home side prevailed 17-10, moving to 3-0 on the season as they prepare for the start of Big Ten play.

But the home crowd had plenty of reasons to walk away disappointed, as Penn State dangled plenty of opportunities for their rivals to snatch away victory. But the Panthers never could grab a firm hold of the chances offered, and the Nittany Lions won the feline showdown on Saturday afternoon.

What should we take away from this strange result in Happy Valley? In a game where Penn State barely held on to the win, here are three things we learned in early Week 4 play on Saturday afternoon.
