It wasn’t everything it should have been, but the Aggies got a dominating win over Lamar. What did we learn about Texas A&M football?

Despite drops, penalties and a couple of turnovers, the Aggies routed Lamar, 62-3. Kellen Mond looked better, but not at all at the level he is expected to be at. His receivers were unable to make plays at times, dropping a couple passes that would have been touchdowns just like a week ago against Clemson.

All that being considered, though, this team got it done and is now into preparing for Auburn in Week 4.

Before we get into that, let’s talk about what we learned about Texas A&M in this matchup with Lamar.

3. Kellen Mond still has some growing to do

Kellen Mond looked overall pretty good this week and I am not going to take that away from him. He finished 20 for 28 for 317 yards and a touchdown. He did throw an interception, on a ball many say shouldn’t have been thrown at all, but that is neither here nor there.

Here is the thing though, it’s Lamar. He had the same kind of exciting, strong play against Texas State in Week 1. He struggled against Clemson. Yes, they are No. 1 and the Aggies were on the road in that one. However, those are the kind of games that the Aggies need him to show up in and he didn’t at all.

So, what does his performance tonight tell us? Mond is good, especially at home. However, he still has some growing to do against elite talent like what he played against a week ago at Clemson.

The Aggies will be at Kyle Field against Auburn next week, so that is a good thing for Mond. However, he won’t always have that crutch to lean on. Look for Fisher and Mond to do a lot of work this week in practice to prepare for the rest of the season.
