Houston, despite a 14-7 halftime lead, couldn’t hold on in the Advocare Texas Kickoff against Washington State football in Week 3’s Friday night action.

Washington State quarterback Anthony Gordon threw three for touchdown passes, 440 yards, and one interception off 36-of-48 passing. The 6-foot-3 has now thrown for more than 400 yards in his first three starts as a Cougar, which includes easy wins over New Mexico State and Northern Colorado to begin the season.

The Advocare Texas Kickoff didn’t disappoint in Week 3 in a matchup featuring two of the most respected offensive minds in the games in Houston’s Dana Holgorsen and Washington State’s Mike Leach. Both are in the second stage of successful head coaching careers — Holgorsen is now three games in his Houston career after eight seasons at West Virginia, and Leach spent 10 seasons at Texas Tech before a move to Washington State in 2012.

The two first met when Holgorsen was a wide receiver and Leach the offensive coordinator at Division-II Iowa Wesleyan.

This Friday night showdown between the Pac-12 and the American promised to be a measuring stick for the two conferences: the American is now 5-3 against the Pac-12, with two of the losses coming from Central Florida.

Star quarterback D’Eriq King completed 13-of-24 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 94 yards.
