In a week with some surprising upsets, the middle and bottom of the college football AP Poll shook up a little bit. Let’s talk winners and losers.

This week came with quite a few upsets at the bottom and middle of the pack when it comes to the AP Top 25 rankings.

Those at the top who were expected to dominate did exactly that, but others looked confused and ultimately found themselves on the wrong end of the win-loss column. There wasn’t too much shakeup, but there was enough for us to discuss.

On that note, let’s talk winners and losers, starting with the guys new to the rankings.

Winner: Arizona State (Not Ranked to No. 24)

For the second straight year, Arizona State knocked off Michigan State, who we will discuss here in a minute. It was one that nearly went into overtime, but a penalty and a missed second-chance field goal brought Sparky the win in this one. They will face off against Colorado in Week 4, a game that they should win but I have seen crazier things happen, especially when overall Arizona State’s offense couldn’t get much going, even though they were playing Michigan State who, despite a horrid offense, has a strong defense.

Winner: California (Not Ranked to No. 23)

It wasn’t this week’s game that pushed Cal into the rankings, it was more of what happened in Week 2 and then what happened around them that brought them into the Top 25. I can tell you that beating the Mean Green of North Texas does nothing for you, but knocking off Washington a week ago will surely do it. They will face off against an Ole Miss team with more questions than answers, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they stay in the rankings for at least another week.
