3. Ian Book has an extremely high ceiling

One of the most notable differences between former quarterback Brandon Wimbush’s offense and the current offense led by senior Ian Book is the latter’s potential for a huge outing regardless of the opponent. Of course, those outings have been few and far between against some of the nation’s top talent, but the point remains.

This is mostly due to Wimbush’s inability to move the ball through the air. We would see Wimbush pile on against poor defenses on occasion, but the aerial aspect of his game would completely vanish when he faced a team that could defend the pass. Wimbush has since claimed the starting job at UCF, but the same issues were on display as he completed just over 50 percent of his passes despite defeating Florida A&M by a score of 62-0.

Wimbush has been an incredible asset to this team, with his leadership contributions often falling under the radar. However, even he himself knew it was time to move on after Book made a more than compelling case for the starting position last season against Wake Forest.

As for the Irish’s upcoming matchup, expect a little more offense than we saw in their last go-around with the Bulldogs. Book put up 360 yards and five touchdowns through the air against New Mexico, so there’s hope that he stays hot and puts forth as close a performance as possible with the addition of tight end Cole Kmet against Georgia.
