Florida Football: 3 takeaways from dominant win over Tennessee
For the second year in a row, Florida football was dominant against Tennessee. What did we learn from the Gators’ victory?
These two teams could not be in more different positions.
In Gainesville, there is life and excitement. Even with an injury at quarterback, this Gators program is trending upwards in a big way.
In Knoxville, the record now moves to 1-3, and rivalry losses always sting more. This one stings especially, considering even the backup quarterback moved the ball up and down the field fairly easily.
This rivalry has produced some classic endings during the last decade, but in the last two years, Florida has made it clear. They own this series right now.
3. Gator defense was stout
Part of the reason this game got so lopsided was the Volunteers inability to get anything going. Unlike previous weeks though, it wasn’t just Tennessee ineptitude.
Volunteer running back Ty Chandler averaged only 3.3 yards per carry on Saturday. Before meeting the Gator defense, Chandler was gaining nearly half that, with 5.9 yards per carry.
Quarterback Jarrett Guarantano had struggled all year, and if Tennessee was to pull the upset, it would have had to happen on the ground. On Saturday, Todd Grantham’s defense made sure that wasn’t the case.
