1. The Huskies defense came through on the road

BYU certainly had their chances to upset the Huskies on Saturday afternoon at home. Several long first-half drives ended with only three points on the scoreboard, though, and the Cougars also missed an extra point when they did get into the endzone in the second quarter.

Washington’s defense did an incredible job tormenting BYU quarterback Zach Wilson. The young Cougars passer finished 26-of-41 for 277 yards, and he put just one touchdown on the scoreboard with his arm. Though he did not throw an interception, Wilson had a costly fumble on a sack that the Huskies returned 69 yards for a touchdown.

The second half proved even tougher for BYU, as they coughed up a fumble and continued to find it hard to move the ball on the Washington defense. In the end, the Cougars finished the day with only 356 total yards of offense at home.

Washington’s defense will play a critical role in the coming weeks as the Huskies dive back into the heart of Pac-12 play. If they hope to repeat as conference champions this season, it will be incumbent on the defensive unit to help ensure that they aren’t stuck in shootouts every week against their league foes.
