It’s only Week 4 and these upsets are already shaking up the College Football Playoff picture, starting with a one-point loss by No. 15 Central Florida.

It was difficult to pick the best upset of Week 4, as several candidates could make a legitimate claim. A nearly three-touchdown Mountain West underdog taking down an SEC foe on the road? A top 10 team losing to an unranked foe playing its preseason third-string quarterback? Or how about Big 12 squad hosting an unranked crosstown rival from the AAC?

These losses ultimately take the back seat to the one suffered by Central Florida on Saturday afternoon. The Knights had staked their claim as the nation’s best Group of Five squad for the past several seasons, including the 2017 self-proclaimed “national champions” bravado and parade at Disney World and the appearance in a New Year’s Six bowl game last year (even though it was a loss to LSU).

All signs point to Boise State emerging as the favorite to grab the “best in Group of Five” crown after this UCF loss, but don’t count out teams like Utah State, SMU or even Appalachian State from making a run at this designation. For Central Florida, the chance to take down two Power Five schools and run the table might have been enough to earn more CFP consideration than they received in 2017, but that matters very little now.

The wide receiver-to-quarterback trick play pass took place on a fourth-and-three with 56 seconds remaining in the game. The Panthers lead 21-10 at halftime, though they trailed down the stretch before the final “Pitt Special” sequence.
