6. Appalachian State 34, North Carolina 31

This battle between in-state foes separated by approximately 165 miles came down to the wire, though the Tar Heels were playing catch up for most of the afternoon. A 54-yard field goal attempt seemed ambitious for North Carolina, but the Mountaineers blocked it to go home as winners. It was Appalachian State’s first win against a Power Five team since the famous upset of No. 5 Michigan in 2007, when the Mountaineers were still an FCS program.

For Mack Brown and the Tar Heels, it’s a disappointing setback after the promising start to 2019 (a win against South Carolina).

5. UCLA 67, No. 19 Washington State 63

There are a lot of ridiculous stats about this game from late Saturday night that went to the previously winless Bruins. The teams combined for 140 points, which is the highest such point total for this season so far. Washington State quarterback Anthony Gordon completed 41-of-61 pass attempts for 570 yards and nine touchdowns. The nine passing touchdowns is the most in a single game since Houston’s Case Keenum achieved the same feat in 2011.

The loss was a tough reality check for the Cougars, who were facing a UCLA team that dropped its first three games of 2019 in a wholly unimpressive fashion.
