4. USC 30, No. 10 Utah 23

USC struggled to establish its run game until a decisive drive late in the game in this Friday night Pac-12 clash. The biggest storyline, though, was backup-turned-starter Kedon Slovis’ injury early in the game, paving the way for formerly third-string quarterback Matt Fink, who took over and completed 21-of-30 passes for 351 yards and three touchdowns.

Utah, as a Top 10 team, was many people’s trendy pick to win the Pac-12 this year and even vie for a College Football Playoff spot. This loss certainly doesn’t end their hopes at winning the conference, but it may effectively end the Pac-12’s chance at landing a team in the CFP.

3. SMU 41, No. 25 TCU 38

“The Battle for the Iron Skillet” was an entertaining, back-and-forth affair between these two rivals in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Uncharacteristically for a Gary Patterson-coached team, the Horned Frogs allowed 40-plus points and failed to keep up with Mustangs quarterback Shane Buechele, a Texas transfer who threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns.

It was SMU’s first win in the series in eight tries against TCU, giving the American Athletic Conference an impressive win. The Mustangs are 4-0 to start this season.
