ACC Football Power Rankings, Week 5: Mack Brown train derailed?
By Dante Pryor
Yes, I’ll have a large Pitt special with a Diet Coke, I’m watching my figure. It’s not on the menu? Where can I get the Pitt special then? Oh, it’s not a delicacy of the steel city. That’s what Pat Narduzzi called the play they ran to defeat the UCF and handed the Knights their first regular season loss since 2016.
It’s tough to gauge how good Pitt is, but that defense is going to keep them in many games this season. They were fantastic against the Knights, sacking freshman quarterback Dillon Gabriel six times and picking him off twice. The Panthers get Delaware at Heinz Field before traveling to Durham to take on the Blue Devils on Oct. 5.
Wake Forest got the day off, and by the day off, I mean the Demon Deacons trounced Elon 49-7. The Deacons have been impressive so far this year. I know they haven’t faced the top end of their schedule, but the way they can score with Jamie Newman and Sage Surrat, they can win a track meet. The only team they can’t beat on the rest of the schedule is Clemson.
I hope Boston College has its track shoes on as the Eagles host the Deacons at Alumni Stadium this week. If they don’t, Wake Forest will run them off the field.
It was tempting to put Wake in this spot, but Old Dominion must be talented because they’ve given two ACC teams all kinds of fits the last two weeks. They gave Virginia Tech all kinds of fits two weeks ago, and now they gave the ‘Hoos all they could handle, but Virginia found a way.
Maybe they were peeking at the schedule and knew they had a little trip to South Bend coming up? They are looking forward to that one. A win against the Irish could mean some national credibility for the V-Men. We’ll see if coach Bronco Mendenhall has the horses to compete with Notre Dame.
Well, Clemson won — again. There are two things astounding about the Tigers. First, they are allowing a mere five points per game. They could have Georgia Tech’s offense and still get to a bowl their defense is so good. Clemson’s defense is that good because guys don’t transfer.
Sure, they’ve had a few guys transfer, but how is a defense that has to replace four NFL defensive linemen this dominant? Simple, guys stay in the program. That defense travels to Chapel Hill to take on the Tar Heels this weekend. Welcome to the ROY bus, Mack Brown.
