Penn State at Maryland (Friday at 8 p.m. ET, FS1)

Spread: Penn State -6.5

Both Penn State and Maryland had a week off after less than stellar performances two weeks ago.

The Terrapins, after looking offensively invincible in their first two games, were grounded against Temple in a stunning 20-17 defeat. Penn State staved off an upset, but the Nittany Lions did little to impress in their own right in a 17-10 win over Pittsburgh, though the Panthers may be a bit better than they were given credit for in the preseason.

This game has major implications in the Big Ten East race as both Maryland and Penn State look to position themselves as legitimate challengers to Ohio State for the throne. The winner of this game will propel upward, while the loser could be headed for a disappointing season, and could be effectively eliminated from the Big Ten race on the final weekend of September.

Penn State has yet to find a running back capable of replacing Miles Sanders’ production, but sophomore Journey Brown could be the next in line in the stable of elite Penn State running backs. Journey eclipsed 100-yards in the win over Pitt two weeks ago, and James Franklin will need his young running back to shoulder the load so as to not put too much pressure on Sean Clifford in his first road start.

I think Maryland’s offense will kick back into gear this week, though Penn State’s front-seven will make the RPO game difficult for Mike Locksley’s crew. I’m not sure Clifford and the Nittany Lions will be able to keep up for four quarters, and Maryland ultimately pulls the upset as a touchdown underdog.

Pick: Maryland 37, Penn State 30
