Baylor football held on for a win despite Iowa State’s impressive comeback. What did we learn from the Bears’ Week 5 victory?

This Big 12 matchup came down to the fourth quarter, just like many thought. However, it wasn’t always close as Baylor built up a 20-0 lead and was in control most of the game. Even though the game was sloppy, with a lot of mistakes, both teams still had a chance to win the game in the fourth.

Credit Iowa State for fighting back after being down by three scores. They took the lead to make it 21-20, before Baylor was able to hit a field goal with 21 seconds left to win 23-21.

What did we learn from the Bears’ win?

3. Game was sloppy throughout

There was plenty of sloppy play to go around the entire game for both teams. While a lot of the sloppiness of the game happened mostly in the first half, it sneaked into the second half, too, especially in Baylor’s kicking game.

Both teams had several missed field goals and Iowa State’s kicker missed a long one in the first half and had another attempt blocked. Baylor’s kicker missed a chip-shot field goal and they couldn’t convert an extra point. It’s obvious Baylor does not trust its kicker as they went for a fourth-and-long in the second half when they were well with in field goal range.

However, the kicker did make the kick to put them ahead 23-21 in the fourth with 21 seconds left.

There were also a few drops from Baylor and a poor throw from Charlie Brewer to an open receiver, although he turned it on in the second half.

Brock Purdy also had a first half to forget as he threw an awful interception when he was trying to toss the ball away. There were penalties through out the game and it was just an overall sloppy game.
