Heisman Trophy Power Rankings, Week 6: Jalen Hurts doing big things
By Dakota Cox
For the second straight week, Tua Tagovailoa has ended up at the top of the Heisman rankings. You can talk about whether or not he’s played someone yet, but he’s done just about everything you can ask of a quarterback. His numbers are better than they were last year, he remains to be completely healthy, and Alabama’s offense has been firing on all cylinders.
Against Ole Miss, Alabama had a new favorite receiver. Devonta Smith had a record-shattering performance where he went for 11 catches, 274 yards, and five touchdowns. Tua broke some records of his own, throwing for 418 yards and scoring seven total touchdowns. Tua is now the leader in touchdowns scored in Alabama history, has the most touchdowns scored in a single game, and he has scored at least five touchdowns in each of his last three games.
What makes Tua so good is the way he can use the talent around him. Ole Miss prioritized shutting down Jerry Jeudy in this game. Because of this, Tua simply went to another of his top targets. He’s just going to find the open man and throw an accurate ball.
I think Tua is the only man in the Heisman race who truly controls his own destiny. There are plenty of great talents in college football, but Tua will likely go against LSU’s, Auburn’s, and Georgia’s defenses before it’s time to cast your final votes. If he keeps this pace against those teams, voters will have no choice but to select him as the Heisman winner.
The Heisman power rankings are still fluid, but they’re starting to cement as weeks continue. As we approach October, we should continue to have a better idea as to who can truly win the Heisman. Nonetheless, we are in for a great race.
